For the current 2009 SAT there are 3 sections, Math, Writing, and Critical Reading, each section is worth 800 points. So a perfect score would be a 2400. Most Ivy league and top colleges/universities would expect something in the 2200-2400 range for sure, however, the best thing to do is to prepare AS EARLY as u can, get the best score u can (with a private tutor.. don't waste money on classes that are not individualized). You will have AT LEAST two times to take the SAT exam, thus an opportunity to improve your score. Once you feel you have scored your best, then look at colleges you are interested in and they will publish the average SAT scores of previous and current admissions, which will give you an idea if you have a chance, however, PLEASE keep in mind that the SAT is ONLY one part of your entire application, and most students put way too much emphasis on their SAT scores, and lose their best opportunities b/c their essay was terrible or they blew the interview (which will keep you out even w/ a perfect SAT score... speaking from personal experience. I hope that helps all of you who are serious and HOPEFULLY ignore idiots like Erob14 who will likely never go to college or do anything but put others down to try to build their pitiful selves up.... GET THERAPY Erob14 AND stop being such a judgemental and predjudice JERK!
